Ahead of Reliance’s annual general meeting at the end of this month, two new Jio phones have been spotted on India’s BIS certification website, suggesting their imminent launch in the country. As reported by 91Mobiles and first spotted by tipster Mukul Sharma, the two models bear serial numbers “JBV161W1” and “JBV162W1”. While the specifications remain unclear, the new Jio phones could be the same model but in different colour options. The phones appeared on the BIS certification website amid speculation about the launch of a Jio 5G phone later this month.
Reliance has spoken about its plans to launch the Reliance Jio 5G smartphone multiple times in the past as part of an effort to transform India into a 2G-free (2G-mukt) nation. A Jio phone was recently spotted on the CPU benchmarking platform Geekbench with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 Plus processor, aligning with Jio’s previously disclosed partnership with the American chipmaker. The Geekbench listing also suggests that the smartphone may include 4GB of RAM. Other leaks related to the Jio 5G phone indicate a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD 90Hz screen, a 5,000mAh battery, and a 13-megapixel dual rear camera setup. On the front, there could be an 8-megapixel sensor for selfies. The company may also provide support for at least 18W charging.
Jio has been vocal about offering phones to the masses at an affordable range. We can expect the Jio 5G phone to cost under Rs 10,000 and run a custom Jio OS for mobile platforms. The company has been working with Google to build a custom interface on top of Android.
The company recently launched two Jio 4G phones for Rs 999 each. One of the 4G phones is made in collaboration with Indian smartphone maker Karbonn. Jio is also inviting other brands to create affordable 4G phones under the Jio branding. However, these are old-gen feature phones with physical keypads, while Jio also offers a Jio smartphone, dubbed JioPhone Next. The Jio 5G may also be called JioPhone Next 5G.
Meanwhile, Reliance Jio is yet to unveil dedicated 5G plans in India. We can expect the company to talk about its 5G rollout in the country, which aims to cover all towns and cities by the end of this year, at the AGM 2023.
Dedicated 5G plans may also aid the company in boosting the sales of the Jio Air Fiber service, a dedicated 5G hotspot device designed for homes and offices. Additionally, we can anticipate the company unveiling some announcements related to AI, which is becoming a crucial component in the investment strategies of many tech companies.
