By Divyanshi Sharma: Having a healthy work-life balance is often linked with higher productivity and better mental health. There are ample studies online that will point you to the benefits of the same. However, Reddit co-founder and former executive chairperson Alexis Ohanian, who is also Tennis superstar Serena William’s husband, has a different ideology. He says that there is nothing like work-life balance and that we should all know when and how to adjust our priorities.
Ohanian, in a Twitter thread posted recently, says that ‘work-life balance’ is a ‘farce’ and if people are chasing that then they are doing something wrong. He adds that it is impossible to achieve anything closer to ‘work-life balance’ and that people should not even try doing that. According to him, the way to manage both work and life is to know when to focus on which part.
“Work-life balance is a farce. If you’re chasing that, you’re doing it wrong. You’ll never achieve anything close to that, nor should you. The key to managing work and life is knowing when you want to focus on which part — accepting that it’s a shifting equilibrium. If you’re chasing that, you’re doing it wrong. You’ll never achieve anything close to that, nor should you. The key to managing work and life is knowing when you want to focus on which part — accepting that it’s a shifting equilibrium,” he wrote in a Twitter post.
Ohanian explained his point in more detail in the next two tweets. He wrote that there will be times when you will have to devote more time to your career, something that all first-time founders of businesses can relate to. And then there will be times when you personal life would demand more attention. There can also be times when you simply are burnt out and want to sit back and take a break.
He concluded the thread by saying that people should know what demands their attention more and should be enough in-tune with themselves to know how to adjust their priorities.
“The point is, work/life “balance” isn’t so clear-cut – it’s a spectrum that’s ever-flowing back and forth. The key is staying tuned into yourself so you know when you need to adjust your priorities and, if you have a partner, keeping an open dialog amid this constant flux,” he added.
Ohanian co-founded Reddit with his friend Steve Huffman in 2005 and stepped down as the brand’s executive chairperson in 2020. He had urged back then that his role should be filled by a black candidate.
“I’ve resigned as a member of the reddit board, I have urged them to fill my seat with a black candidate, + I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the black community, chiefly to curb racial hate,” he had written in a Twitter post announcing his resignation.
Presently, Steve Huffman serves as the CEO of Reddit.
